Calvert Hall Begins Construction on New Sports Performance Center
$800,000 project will add classroom space, team meeting areas, golf training facility and upgraded locker rooms
Calvert Hall College High School has begun construction on a new multi-purpose athletic and academic facility, the school announced earlier this month. Officials believe the new facility will significantly enhance the student-athlete experience while also creating additional instructional space for students.
The Huffman Family Sports Performance Center, an $800,000 renovation project located inside Keelty Hall adjacent to Alumni Memorial Gymnasium, is scheduled to open before the start of the 2026-27 school year.
The renovation will transform existing locker room space into a modern facility featuring three primary components designed to serve both academic and athletic needs.
Among the highlights is an 80-seat lecture hall that will function as classroom space during the school day before transitioning into a team meeting and strategy room for athletic programs in the afternoons and evenings.
The project also includes a dedicated golf training area featuring a golf simulator, giving Calvert Hall's golf program a year-round training resource. In addition, the renovation will provide updated locker room facilities for physical education classes and school athletic teams.
Calvert Hall Athletic Director Dan Mulford believes the project will have a far-reaching impact across the campus.
"In addition to creating more academic class space for our students, this transformational facility will redefine the student-athlete experience at The Hall," Mulford said. "Featuring state-of-the-art locker rooms, dedicated team strategy and meeting spaces, and a cutting-edge golf simulator, this premier addition will fuel excellence, strengthen team culture, and elevate our athletic programs to new heights."
School officials say the project aligns with Calvert Hall's ongoing efforts to provide modern facilities that support both classroom learning and athletic development.
The project is being funded through the generosity of Richie and Dawn Huffman and The Huffman Family Foundation. The Huffmans have deep ties to the school through their sons — Olen, Evan and Preston having graduated from Calvert Hall, while their youngest son, Camden, is a member of the Class of 2028.
"As a mother and President of The Huffman Family Foundation, I am always seeking opportunities to create a lasting and meaningful impact on the lives of young people," Dawn Huffman said. "The Calvert Hall community holds a special place in our family's heart."
Calvert Hall President Br. John Kane, FSC, Ed.D., said the family's contribution will provide benefits well into the future.
"We are grateful for the extraordinary generosity of The Huffman Family Foundation," Kane said. "Their investment in this visionary new addition will make an immediate and lasting impact on our students, faculty and future generations of Cardinals."
Richie Huffman said the project stood out because of its ability to enhance both academics and athletics.
"This project is going to enrich a space for a community that means so much to our family," Huffman said. "Not only will the revamping of this space at Calvert Hall provide an academic advantage for the students, but it will also serve to enhance the experience for the student-athletes at the school."
Construction is expected to be completed in time for students to utilize the new facility when the 2026-27 academic year begins.
