Area football hits postseason mode; Calvert Hall, Mount St. Joseph to collide for MIAA A title game spot

by Derek Toney

The time has arrived. The area football campaign switches into the postseason with the opening round of the state public playoffs and the MIAA semifinals.

After a year hiatus, the MIAA A Conference playoffs return starting Friday evening. There’s a new format for the state public tournament with 32 teams (previously 16) in each classification qualified. Fifty-five local squads take to the field hoping to reach Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium for the state final in four weeks.

Below is the top five games of the weekend, followed by the complete area schedule.

No. 9 Archbishop Spalding (5-5) at No. 2 McDonogh School (10-0)

What: MIAA A Conference semifinal

When: Friday, 6 p.m.

What you need to know: The top-seeded Eagles will try to take another step towards a first MIAA A title since 2013. Two weeks ago, McDonogh needed overtime to dispatch Spalding, which suffered one of its worst losses (have lost last four decisions) in recent seasons in a 49-7 bashing at Mount St. Joseph last week.

Archbishop Curley (7-3) vs. No. 13 St. Vincent Pallotti (9-1)

What: MIAA B Conference semifinal

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Where: Fairland Regional Park

What you need to know: Curley, which won two games last season, is back in MIAA B postseason play for the first time since 2015. Pallotti, the No. 1 seed and last year’s runner-up, defeated the Friars, 28-7, during the regular season.

Century (6-3) at No. 20 Glenelg (6-3)

What: Class 2A West Region first round

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

What you need to know: Glenelg begins its quest for a second straight 2A state final. Century, making its third postseason in four seasons, hasn’t won a postseason match since reaching the 2A semifinals in 2009.

John Carroll School (6-3) vs. No. 14 St. Mary’s (7-3)

What: MIAA B Conference semifinal

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

Where: Pascal Field

What you need to know: St. Mary’s begins its quest to become the first team to win three consecutive MIAA titles in 20 years. The Saints defeated John Carroll – in its first postseason since winning the title in 2015 – 28-21 in Annapolis three weeks ago.

No. 4 Calvert Hall College (8-2) at No. 3 Mount St. Joseph (8-2)

What: MIAA A Conference semifinal

When: Saturday, 12 p.m.

What you need to know: Calvert Hall, overcoming a 0-2 league start, is the only team to reach all four MIAA A postseasons (2011, 2012, 2017). Mount St. Joseph defeated the Cardinals, 20-10, in the league opener back in late September.
