No. 11 Calvert Hall returned from a bye week with an impressive offensive performance, Friday night in the rain, as the Cardinals defeated visiting St. Frances, 34-20, to win their MIAA A Conference football opener.
The Cardinals (3-2, 1-0) were lead by B.J. Watson, who scored three touchdowns in the victory.
Calvert Hall’s special teams set up the first score of the night, recovering a muffed punt deep in St. Frances territory, leading to a 2-yard TD run by Watson and the Cardinals lead 7-0 after one quarter.
Special teams also came up big in the second quarter. After St. Frances scored to pull within one, at 7-6, Morgan Scroggins returned the following kickoff 62 yards for a touchdown and a 13-6 Cardinal lead. Calvert Hall’s kickoff coverage then contributed by recovering a live ball at the St. Frances 16 on the ensuing kick. Two minutes later, Watson was in the end zone for the second time on the evening and the Cardinals went to the half with a 20-6 lead.
The lead grew to 26-6 on a 6-yard third quarter TD run by Omari DeBerry. St. Frances scored twice in the fourth quarter, but Watson split those points with a 37-yard touchdown run, with 7:09 left, and the Cardinals had more than enough points to close out the win.
Next Friday, Calvert Hall will host No. 8 Archbishop Spalding in another big league showdown, while St. Frances (1-5, 0-2) will host top-ranked Gilman on Friday at Patterson Park.
