The Beth Tfiloh boys soccer team played its third game in as many days and finished off the grueling stretch, Wednesday, with a 3-0 victory over Cristo Rey.
The Hornets put forth a valiant defensive effort, with goalkeepers Carlos Brown (10 saves) and Dylan Lehew (12) each frustrating the Warriors for much of the match. Ultimately, Beth Tfiloh’s time of possession and offensive pressure (34 shots) took its toll. Brothers Justin and Jacob Welfeld each scored unassisted, highlight reel long-range goals in the first half.
In the second half, the game remained 2-0 until there were just 10 minutes to play, when Scott Tepper of Beth Tfiloh finished off a great cross from Andrew Kasner to to set the final score.
Cristo Rey (1-7, 0-6) got some outstanding play from Zach Wiley, while Justin Hoffman and Andrew Schwartz controlled the midfield for Beth Tfiloh. Ryan Ross of the Warriors made four saves in goal to earn the shutout.
Beth Tfiloh (3-7, 3-4) is now in the thick of the MIAA C Conference playoff chase with two games to go. The Warriors are in a three-way tie for fourth-place with Concordia Prep and St. Vincent Pallotti.
