It’s hard to recall a season in the last decade that the McDonogh Eagles did not enter a soccer season as one of the clear favorites to compete for the MIAA A Conference soccer season.

The 2016 McDonogh squad is more than capable of defending the crown it won a year ago, when the Eagles went 21-0-1 and finished ranked No. 5 in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer.

Being an underdog is not a reflection on the current Eagles, but rather recognition of the enormous talent gone from last fall’s squad, including VSN Co-Player of the Year Mike DeShields, now at Wake Forest, Tunde Akinlosotu, the Eagles top scorer last fall before being suspended prior to the playoffs, and Stephen Nichols, who will miss his junior year to play academy soccer.

Head coach Brandon Quaranta, VSN’s 2015 Coach of the Year who has posted a sensational 40-1-1 record over his first two seasons at the helm, will count on two talented seniors, Chris MacDonald and Jared Moses, to provide the offensive punch.

In addition Luke Davis will be counted on to make major contributions and Jayson Cyrus, a junior transfer from Severn School, will provide strength to McDonogh’s defensive back. Cyrus, MacDonald and Davis are all members of the Baltimore Celtic club.
