Second-ranked Dons claim a 1-0 road win over No. 13 Greyhounds
No. 2 Loyola traveled to Gilman on a beautiful Monday afternoon for a key MIAA A Conference soccer showdown with the No. 13 Greyhounds.
Gilman (7-2, 6-3 MIAA A) came in with a five game winning streak, but undefeated Loyola (8-0, 7-0 MIAA A) stayed that way, pulling out a 1-0 victory.
It was a tactical match-up that saw Loyola try and break down an organized Gilman defensive effort. The Dons had a number of chances during the first half only to be thwarted by the Gilman defense, as the teams went to intermission in a scoreless tie. The second half continued much as the first, with Loyola on the offense and the Dons’ patience was finally rewarded.
Midway through the half, Dominic Caltabiano calmly put away a rebound shot for the lone goal of the contest, to elevate the Dons to victory. Patrick Milmoe had 3 saves for the shutout.
With 21 points, Loyola sits atop of the A Conference as they battle with No. 1 McDonogh (6-0) for first place. Gilman remains in a three-way tie for third place with Calvert Hall and Archbishop Curley, all with 12 points.
