Two-teams at opposite ends of this week’s VSN Baseball Top 20 met at Calvert Hall College’s Carlo Krispino Stadium, Tuesday afternoon, and the top-ranked Cardinals saw two pitchers combine on a 2-hit shutout of No. 20 John Carroll School, 4-0, in MIAA A Conference action.

Calvert Hall scored once in the third, but did not take control until the Cardinals added three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Cardinals collected seven hits, from seven different players, with Michael Poling and Brendan Webster each contributing a double and Gabe Nieto driving in a pair with a triple. JP Murphy and James Elmore each had an RBI without benefit of a hit.

Brennan Maher made the start for Calvert Hall and pitched four innings, allowing just three hits and striking out six. Andrew Rosso pitched the final three innings, not allowing a hit and striking out two.

Calvert Hall improved to 8-1 overall and 3-1 in the MIAA A Conference where the Cardinals enjoy a small lead over five teams all at 2-1.

John Carroll (2-2 overall) slipped out of that group and the Patriots are now 2-2 in the league.
