The final day of the historic 2021 MIAA A Conference lacrosse regular season is in the books and the seeds are now set for for the first ever 11-team playoff bracket, with post-season play getting underway on Thursday.

Rivalry Day was another wild day of lacrosse, especially the showdown at Calvert Hall between the host Cardinals and Loyola. Calvert Hall absolutely dominated in building a 10-1 halftime lead and then held on for dear life for a 12-10 win as Loyola came storming back in the second half.

Boys’ Latin also led 10-1 at the half, but the Lakers never slowed up, overpowering St. Paul’s, 19-2. In other action, second-place Archbishop Spalding handled Mount St. Joseph, 14-7 and top-seeded McDonogh subdued Gilman, 14-8. In the most exciting game of the day, Severn erased a 9-4 St. Mary’s lead with five fourth quarter goals and carried the momentum in over time, to pull off a stunning 10-9 win.

Prior to the start of the day, McDonogh (10-0) and Spalding (8-2) had already locked up the top two seeds. Likewise, St. Mary’s (6-3) had also cemented its place as the 3rd-seed.

The scrambled for fourth place ended up in a three-way tie between Loyola, Boys’ Latin and Calvert Hall all at 6-4. In head-to-head competition among the three, all finished 1-1. Under MIAA rules the next tie-breaker is your record against the other teams in the league, starting at the top and working down, until the logjam is broken. With all three losing to McDonogh, Loyola claimed the 4th-seed as the only team to beat second-seeded Spalding.

Boys’ Latin then took the 5th-seed because it owned the head-to-head win over Calvert Hall, dropping the Cardinals to the 6th-seed.

Severn (5-5) is the 7th-seed, followed by 8th-seeded St. Paul’s (3-6), 9th-seeded Gilman (3-7), 10th-seeded Mount St. Joseph (1-9) and 11th-seeded John Carroll (0-10).

In Thursday’s opening round, Calvert Hall will host John Carroll, Severn will host St. Joe and Gilman will travel to St. Paul’s.

The quarterfinals will be played on Saturday. McDonogh will entertain the St. Paul’s/Gilman winner, St. Mary’s will host the Calvert Hall/John Carroll survivor and Spalding will get the Severn/St. Joe winner. In addition, Loyola will host Boys’ Latin in an outstanding quarterfinal match-up.

Saturday’s winners will advance to a semifinal double-header on Tuesday, May 18 at Navy-Marine Corp Stadium and the championship game will also be at Navy on Friday, May 21.

VSN will publish game reports later this evening, but here is the official MIAA A Conference Lacrosse playoff bracket.
