A matchup between Calvert Hall College and Indiana’s Culver Academy, the nation’s top two boys’ lacrosse teams this past spring, was on the cusp entering the final day of the opening session of National High School Lacrosse Showcase Sunday morning.

Deerfield Academy had other ideas. The Massachusetts postgraduate school eliminated the Cardinals with an 8-1 semifinal decision at Blandair Park in Columbia.

Rising junior midfielder Cade Goldberg had two goals and an assist for Deerfield, which ended the New York’s Flyers’ (Chaminade) two-year title reign with a 7-3 victory in the final early Sunday afternoon. Deerfield, which plays in the New England Prep School Athletic Conference, went undefeated at arguably the premier event on the summer recruiting circuit.

Rising sophomore attack Jordan Wray accounted for Calvert Hall’s only goal. The three-time reigning MIAA A Conference champ Cardinals, who shared No. 1 with Culver Academy in the final Inside Lacrosse national Top 25 poll, never led Sunday.

It was a rough final day for local squads in the opening session of the NHSLS. Gilman, which posted a perfect pool play mark, but missed the playoffs in a tiebreaker, lost to St. John’s College from the District, 8-7.

McDonogh School, St. Paul’s School, Boys’ Latin School, John Carroll School and Hereford Zone (Hereford) also fell. Loyola Blakefield posted the lone area victory with a 10-5 victory over Illinois state champ New Trier.

The second session of the NHSLS started Sunday afternoon with Archbishop Spalding and Baltimore-based Tide Lacrosse Club each winning twice while Glenelg Country School split. The three locals will play two games Monday in pool play.

The top team in each pool (five pools total) and the next three best teams (based on record) will advance to the quarterfinals Monday evening.
