Barthelme and Reid combine for 39 as Crusaders rout Chapelgate in opener

Playing its season opener at home in Brooklandville, under new head coach Phil Hahn, St. Paul’s routed Chapelgate Christian, 62-47, in MIAA B Conference action behind the play of its senior big men — Troy Barthelme and Ziggy Reid.

Barthelme netted a game-high 21 points and Reid scored 18 to pace the Crusaders.

St. Paul’s started the game with a 10-0 run and were paced early by Reid, who scored 11 points in the first frame. Reid and Barthelme, both seniors, continued to play inside out and feed off each other, helping St. Paul’s control the game most of the way.

Barthelme also contributed a game high 10 rebounds and anchored the defense. Football standout Leo Kelly, who will play quarterback in the BTC All-Star game on Saturday, proved he could get out on the hardwood as well, filling up the stat sheet with seven points and eight rebounds. The Crusaders never trailed in the MIAA B conference matchup.

Chapelgate, also playing its league opener, fell to 1-3 overall on the season.
