The St. Paul’s golf team capped a perfect 15-0 season, Saturday at Caves Valley Country Club, as the Crusaders defeated Loyola, 14-7, in the MIAA A Conference team valley.
The Crusaders and Dons navigated wet conditions on the prestigious Baltimore County tract with St. Paul’s winning four of the six individual matches and claiming 2.5 of the 3 team points to secure the win.
In the first grouping, Loyola’s Will Koras won the No. 1 pairing, 3-0, over Ben Morris, but freshman Lou Baker came up with a 3-0 win for the Crusaders in the No. 2 pairing, topping another freshman, Loyola’s Trent Geritz. The teams split the team point in this pairing.
In the second group, St. Paul’s swept both matches and the team point. No. 3 Trip Smith, a junior, defeated Loyola’s Jack Mulliken, 2-1, and the Crusader junior Will Ford, at No. 4, topped Troy Meurer, 2.5-.5.
Loyola’s second win came in the No. 5 pairing, with Noah Peck claiming a 2-1 win over St. Pau’ls Jake Geis. In the No. 6 pairing, St. Paul’s Campbell Shelhoss shot day’s lowest score, with a 70, to down Thomas McAuliffe, 3-0. The Crusaders also won the team point in this group.
This was St. Paul’s first MIAA A team title since 2007 and their seventh overall. That is more than any other school. The Crusaders also won B Conference championships in 1996 and 1997.
