Saints score five times in fourth quarter to claim come-from-behind win in MIAA lax opener

Hosting John Carroll School, Tuesday evening in Annapolis, St. Mary’s got a strong test from the visiting Patriots and needed a five goal run at the start of the fourth quarter to claim a 9-6, come-from-behind, victory in the 2021 MIAA A Conference lacrosse opener for both schools.

Trailing 5-4 entering the fourth quarter, Tyler Barnett pulled the Saints even, with 10:49 to play, and Owen Barcus put the Saints in front to stay with a goal 42 seconds later.

Barnett and Barcus scored back-to-back goals one more time and Nick Golini put the ninth Saints tally on the board, at the 5:40 mark, as St. Mary’s lead grew to 9-5.

Barnett and Golini each had a pair of goals and an assist, while Barcus finished with two goals as well.

Erick Chick scored at the end of the opening quarter to give the Saints a 2-1 lead, but John Carroll battled back to forge a 3-3 tie at the half. The Patriots then outscored St. Mary’s 2-1 in the third to take a one goal lead into the final quarter.

Colin Burlace and Will Brimhall also scored for the Saints, while Will Hopkins had two assists and Ford Marchant had one. In addition, Teddy Androus won 11-of-18 face-offs and Wes Schmidt stopped seven shots in goal.

John Carroll’s goals came from six different players, as Max Snellenburg, Travis Smith, Logan Trombley, Jackson Marindin, Athan Barmer and Elie Fraiji all found the cage.

Snellenburg also had an assist and the Patriots got an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Alex Stewart, who stopped 20 shots.
