In perhaps one of the biggest upsets in MIAA B Conference soccer history, St. Mary’s stunned No. 19 Severn, Wednesday in Severna Park, winning the MIAA B Conference match 2-1.

The Saints have won just one league game in each of the last two years, while the Admirals have won 27 conference matches over that period on their way to back-to-back league titles. At the moment, however, the Saints are 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the league, while Severn is 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

All of the scoring took place in the first half. Taylor Hawkins put the Saints on the board first, converting an assist from Lachlan Hertel in the 21st minute. Seven minutes later Luke Haschert made it 2-0 with an unassisted tally.

Severn got on the board in the 35th minute with unassisted goal by Nate Gauthier, but, despite repeated pressure, the Admirals never found the equalizer.

Severn owned a 17-4 advantage in shots and had nine corner kicks to just one for the Saints, but the Admirals could turn those opportunities into goals.

Trevor Shanahan had two saves in the Severn net, while Chris Spindler had nine saves for the Saints.
