Saints defeat Georgetown Prep to complete impressive run
With no MIAA basketball championships in the abbreviated 2021 season, this year’s St. Mary’s boys basketball team may not receive the credit it ultimately deserves, but the Saints put on quite a show this winter, ending their season on Monday with a 66-63 overtime win over Montgomery County’s Georgetown Prep, and a 13-game winning streak.
After opening the season with a four-point loss to Gerstell Academy of the A Conference, the Saints rolled through their MIAA B Conference rivals. That was followed with consecutive wins over Gilman School and St. Vincent Pallotti of the A Conference and Monday’s win over the Hoyas, for a 13-1 record.
The Saints led throughout much of regulation, but were outscored in the fourth quarter 21-13 as the Hoyas forced overtime, before St. Mary’s prevailed in the extra session.
Aidan Harris led the Saints in the finale, scoring 24 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Connor Harris added 15 points and seven rebounds, while Peyton Mason scored 11 points to go with two rebounds and five assists. Also of note was a nine point, eight rebound effort by Jack Bousum.
