After an impressive win Monday, Mount St. Joseph basketball found again the rigors of Baltimore Catholic League play Wednesday evening against Calvert Hall College. In the end, Bryson Tucker kept the Gaels’ streak intact.

The freshman scored 22 points leading Mount St. Joseph to a 62-56 decision over the Cardinals inside the Smith Center in Southwest Baltimore. Old Dominion University-bound guard D’Angelo Stines added 11 points for the Gaels (8-1 overall, 4-1 BCL)

The Irvington school, which handled previously undefeated Our Lady of Mount Carmel (78-67) Monday evening, needed a couple of late plays to fend off a tenacious Cardinal squad, coming off a huge blowout loss Monday. The win pushes Mount St. Joseph’s win streak to seven and keeps it tie for second with Mount Carmel and Archbishop Spalding with a week left in the regular season.

The Gaels, holding a terse one-point lead, 53-52, with 3 minutes, 16 seconds left in regulation, got a clutch 3-pointer from Tucker, a 6-foot-6 forward. Tucker, who had 16 points in Monday’s win, had eight in the final quarter Wednesday.

Mount St. Joseph claimed a 20-8 first quarter advantage Wednesday, and led, 37-29 at intermission. But Calvert Hall (5-5, 0-4 BCL), which dropped a 106-45 decision at St. Frances Academy Monday evening, didn’t go away.

The Cardinals shaved the deficit to 48-43 entering the fourth and pulled to within one twice in the fourth, the last at 53-52 after Mike Williams’ two free throws. Williams, a sophomore, led Calvert Hall with 16 points and Karim Harris added 14.

The young and improved Cardinals look to get its first BCL win Friday when they host John Carroll School Friday evening. Mount St. Joseph heads to Hagerstown for a BCL match with St. Maria Goretti Friday evening.
