In a game that took big swings back and forth, Mount St. Joseph rallied from behind, Tuesday night, to defeat Loyola Blakefield, 8-7, in an elimination game in the MIAA A Conference double-elimination baseball tournament.
The contest was a home game for Loyola, but it was played on the turf at Calvert Hall in light rain, as the Dons home field was unplayable. The Gaels jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one but surrendered 5 runs in the bottom of the second to fall behind by two. St. Joe regained the lead with 3 runs in the fourth and added another run in the fifth, before the Dons scored two times in the bottom of the fifth to tie the contest at 7-7. The Gaels then scored the winning run in the top of the 6th on a RBI single by Connor Feustle.
Festal had a big game, going 2-for-3 with 4 RBI and one run scored. Sean Zaranski had two hits, an RBI and a run scored, while Jack Stilling, Ethan Gallagher and Jake Wyandt each drove in a run.
Three Gaels worked the game on the mound, with Trevor Basso pitching two scoreless innings to close out the game, allowing 2 hits and no runs to earn the win.
Will Glock had a pair of RBIs to lead Loyola.
The Dons closed their season at 17-11. St. Joe (17-13) survives to see another day and will visit Gilman on Wednesday afternoon. Also on Wednesday in the tournament, 2nd-seeded Calvert Hall will visit top-seeded Archbishop Spalding in the winner’s bracket final. The winner will advance to Sunday’s finals at Ripken Stadium while the loser will face the Gilman-St. Joe winner for the second spot in the finals.
