Gaels claim six titles in West Virginia event

Mount St. Joseph headed to West Virginia to compete in the Washington Elite Opener at Washington High School in Charles Town. The trip proved fruitful for the Gaels as they won the team race over State College of Pennsylvania, 504-343. The gaudy numbers are due to this being a pool-based tournament where points are maxed out.
“The Elite Opener was a good test for our upper and lower classmen,” Gaels coach Harry Barnabae said. “Going into the Walsh Ironman tournament in Ohio this week it provided us with an opportunity to compete against some of the better wrestlers from Virginia, West Virginia and State College High School in Pennsylvania. The entire team performed well, and as always; we have room for improvement.”
St. Joe pushed nine wrestlers into the finals and saw six come away as champions, Jacob Wright (120), Chris Barnabae (126), Nathan Porter (132), Chris Roybal (152), Connor Strong (160), and Issac Righter (285).
Settling for silver were Coleman Nogle (106), Clement Woods (138), and Matthew Jun (145). Frankie Antonelli (113) and Anthony Zancan (182) earned bronze. Parker Warner (195) was fourth. Placing fifth were Lucas Ognissanti (152) and Gavin Dixon (220). Nicholas Antonelli was eighth at 113 and Liam Flynn finished eleventh at 220.
