Julian Reese finished with 20 points Friday as St. Frances defeated Gilman. The Panthers improved to 5-0.

St. Frances Academy boys basketball team got off to a slow start Friday against Gilman School. The Panthers quickly found their footing, and their perfect season remains intact.

The Panthers improved to 5-0 with an 80-51 decision over the Greyhounds in a MIAA A Conference match at The Finney Center in Roland Park. University of Maryland recruit Julian Reese scored 20 points and freshman Daquan Davis and Derik Queen each finished with 17.

Down 10 in the second quarter, the East Chase Street school scored 72 points over the final three quarters. St. Frances and Our Lady of Mount Carmel are the only undefeated in this truncated MIAA A campaign.

The Panthers didn’t score their first basket until midway in the first quarter and trailed 20-10 in the second after the Greyhounds’ Kolt Pearce buried a 3-pointer. St. Frances rolled off 15 straight, capped with a Queen 3-pointer, and led 29-24 at halftime.

Queen, 6-foot-8, and 6-9 Reese began dominating inside and out, combining for 15 as the Panthers scored 27 points in the third for a 56-37 advantage. Gilman opened the fourth with eight straight to close to 56-45, but St. Frances, capped with a Reese dunk, answered with an 11-0 run to put the game out of reach.

Senior guard Byron Ireland chipped with 14 points for St. Frances. Junior guard Christian Winborne had a game-best 24 points, and Rayuan Lane added 11 for Gilman, which dropped its second straight after a 3-0 start.

The Greyhounds travel to Irvington for a MIAA A match with Mount St. Joseph Monday evening. The Panthers host Gerstell Academy Monday evening.
