McFarland’s hat-trick leads the way

Archbishop Spalding scored five times in the third quarter to build a three goals over No. 4 Loyola and the host Cavaliers hung on for an 8-7 MIAA A Conference lacrosse upset.

Spalding (6-3 overall, 1-1 MIAA A), ranked 15th this week by VSN, proved that anything can happen in the MIAA, as Nik McFarland scored a hat-trick to lead the way for the Cavs.

The teams were tied 3-3 at the half when Cavs exploded for five goals in the third. Josh Tang scored twice in the game and Spalding got one goal and one assist from Conor Suplee. Cole Llewelyn and Dany Shay scored once each, Russell Melendez added two assists and Burke Webb and Ian Swidersky had one assist each.

Loyola (6-3 overall, 0-1 MIAA A) outshot Spalding, 35-25, but Nate Hutcheson made 10 saves in the Cavaliers’ goal. The teams split 18 face-offs and both teams scooped 16 ground balls.

Jack Koras and Connor Hume had two goals each for Loyola and Alex Reid had a goal and three assists. In addition, Liam Bateman had a goal and two assists and Alex Breschi had a goal.
