No. 6 Archbishop Spalding overcame a spirited effort by host Calvert Hall College, Friday night in Towson, with a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns to pull out a 28-21 MIAA A Conference victory over the Cardinals.

The Cavaliers (8-3 overall, 4-2 MIAA A) tied the game, at 21, with 7:18 to play on a 1-yard run by Avery Simmons and then got the game winner, with just 55 seconds remaining, on another 1-yard run by Simmons, who finished with 126 yards rushing in the contest.

As good as Simmons was, his rushing total was nearly doubled by the ground game of quarterback Zach Abey, who tortured the Cardinal defense for 249 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries.  Abey’s TD came with 1:11 to go in the first half, giving the Cavs a 14-13 lead at the intermission.

After a scoreless third quarter, Calvert Hall (3-7, 1-4 MIAA A) still trailed by a point at the start of the final quarter, but moved in front on a 3-yard run by sophomore Ben Oliver, followed by 2-point conversion run by kicker Jake Soriano.

Spalding scored the game’s first touchdown on a 3-yard by Brian Baublitz, early in the first quarter.  Calvert Hall, however, got consecutive rushing touchdowns from junior Damien Farmer, in the second quarter to move in front, 13-7.

The contest marked the season finale for Spalding, which finished in third place in the A Conference.  Calvert Hall still has two game to play as they will host powerful Eastern Christian Academy, ranked No. 3 in the state, next Friday, and then meeting rival Loyola Blakefield on Thanksgiving morning.
