In the MIAA A Conference, Archbishop Spalding is not the first team on the tip of your tongue when football league powers are discussed. Overlooking the Cavaliers in 2016, however, could be a big mistake.
Led by Anne Arundel County Player of the Year Evan Fochtman, Spalding’s senior quarterback, the Cavaliers have talent, experience and depth. They also went 8-3 last year, including 4-2 in the A Conference, where they finished in a three-way tie for second place.
“We have the ability to create and stop explosive plays,” said head coach Kyle Schmitt, entering his fourth year with the Cavaliers. “Our young players need to prove they can handle situational football and we need to show an ability to win close games in conference.”
Nick Vermillion, who also stars on Spalding’s baseball team, is back for his senior year after leading the team in tackles the last two years. He is a two-way player, playing both linebacker and fullback. Juniors Daniel Hood, Julius Chestnut and DaeSean Winston, a two year starter who has generated substantial D1 interest, will join Vermillion in the linebacking corp. Hood was last year’s second leading tackler, Chestnut is also the Cavs top returning running back and Winston plays wide-out on offense.
Cody Winokur, a 2nd-team All-Anne Arundel County selection last fall, is back as a senior anchor on both the offensive and defensive lines. He will be joined on both lines by senior Devin Miller.
Senior Corey Gaines also returns as a linebacker and tight end, while sophomore Sean Spencer returns as the team’s top defensive back.
“Staying healthy is a key,” added Schmitt. “We must also receive strong OL/DL play in conference.”
