Cavaliers win MIAA A hockey crown; first title since 2015

Archbishop Spalding High broke open a tight game, netting three goals in the third period to post a 4-1 victory over Mount St. Joseph to win the MIAA A Conference ice hockey crown at Piney Orchard Friday evening.

Max Fleckenstein’s goal with 7 minutes, 9 seconds left in regulation broke a 1-1 tie for the Cavaliers (12-4-2 overall), who won their first A title since 2015. The win completes a three-game unbeaten run this season against the Gaels.

The teams played to a 3-3 tie at the Gardens Ice House in Laurel last month after Spalding shutout last season’s champ Gaels (10-6-2), 4-0, at Piney Orchard in early December.

Liam Eden and Evan Donnelly each tacked on goals in the third period. Frankie Megan had the other goal for the Cavaliers.
