BCL teams go 0-3 on first day of Alhambra Invitational; St. Frances and Mount St. Joe will meet on Friday

It was a not a good night at the Alhambra Catholic Invitational for the three Baltimore Catholic League entries, as all three were upended by Washington Catholic Athletic Conference squads at Frostburg State University.

In its opener, Mount St. Joseph took a 42-35 first half lead, but the Gaels were outscored by 14 in the second half as they were defeated by Gonzaga, 74-67. Senior All-American Jalen Smith led the Gaels with 29 points.

St. Maria Goretti took the court next and also had a big first half, as it led DeMatha 26-19 at the break. The Staggs, however, erupted for 40 second half points and won going away, 59-48. R.J. Blakney led Goretti with 10 points, seven assists and four rebounds.

In the final game of the night, St. Frances, the only BCL squad favored on Thursday, fell to Bishop O’Connell, 82-73.

The day’s results setup a rematch of last Sunday’s Baltimore Catholic League Tournament final, as St. Joe and St. Frances will square off in Friday’s consolation round, at 5:45 p.m. St. Frances has defeated the Gaels in all three previous meetings this season.

Goretti will play tournament host Bishop Walsh at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
