Admirals rout St. Mary’s 58-32 to lock down top spot in the post-season; Indian Creek, Gerstell, St. Paul’s, Curley and St. John’s Catholic Prep round out the field

LJ Owens had another big night and his Severn Admirals routed visiting St. Mary’s to clinch the top seed for next week’s MIAA B Conference playoffs.

Owens scored 29 points to lead the way, while Mo Terry, AJ Bruch and Jermaine Hall combined for 24 points.

With the victory, the Admirals finished the regular season at 24-5 overall and in a three-way tie for first-place with Gerstell Academy and Indian Creek, all at 13-3 in the league. Gerstell closed its league schedule on Friday with a 65-62 win at Archbishop Curley and Indian Creek defeated Friends, 79-55.

All of the traditional MIAA tie-breakers fail to break the tie between the league leaders, but there is a basketball specific tie-breaker that does sort out the seeding of the top three. It is the least amount of points allowed in the head-to-head matchups.

Against Gerstell and Indian Creek, over four games, Severn allowed 185 points. Indian Creek allowed 235 and Gerstell allowed 249. Thus Severn is the top seed, Indian Creek the second seed and Gerstell the third. Severn and Indian Creek will both have first round byes.
