The MIAA B Conference Baseball Tournament, washed out of its scheduled start on Friday, got underway on Friday with a pair slugfests, as third-seeded Severn defeated sixth-seeded Mount Carmel, 11-9, and fourth-seeded St. Vincent Pallotti claimed a 10-9 walk-ff victory over fifth-seeded Annapolis Area Christian.
At Kinder Farm Park, Severn pounded out 13 hits and the Admirals were led by Ethan O’Malley and Tyrek Thornton with 3 apiece. Jimmy Riley picked up on the win on the mound for the Admirals.
In Laurel at Panther Park, both teams struggled defensively, but the bats woke up late for both teams. AACS scored five of their nine runs in the last three innings of the game, while the Panthers scored four runs in the last two innings to win the game.
Down 9-8 in the bottom of the 7th-inning, Brandon Stewart (1-2 with 2 walks) led-off with a walk. This was followed by a single from Alex Cordon (2-5 with 2 runs scored) and a bunt base hit from Devin Brogden (2-3 with 2 walks) to set the stage for junior Newt Davis. Wasting no time, Davis hit a walk-off two-run double on the first pitch to win the game for the Panthers. Sophomore reliever Ryan Leonardi picked up the win out of the pen.
On Tuesday, Pallotti will visit top-seeded Boys’ Latin in one winners’ bracket contest and second-seeded Glenelg Country will host Severn in the other contest. In addition, Mount Carmel will visit AACS in the tournament’s first elimination game.
