Admirals and Eagles each advance with shutout victories

Severn School, winner of the last three MIAA B Conference soccer championships, is back in position to win a fourth, after blanking Saints Peter & Paul, 3-0, Monday afternoon as the MIAA B Conference soccer playoffs got underway.

As they have done all season Devin McCarthy and Nate Gauthier led the Severn offense, with McCarthy having two goals and an assist, which was mirrored by Gauthier’s goal and two assists.

The Admirals outshot Saints Peter & Paul 13-4 and had a 7-5 advantage in corners. The Sabres closed their season at 6-7-4.

If Severn is to win a fourth straight title it must get past top-seeded Friends (15-1-1), the best team in the league this fall, when the Admirals travel to Baltimore on Thursday afternoon for a semifinal showdown. The Quakers swept the first two meetings but both contests were one goal affairs.

In the other quarterfinal, Annapolis Area Christian eliminated Gerstell Academy (7-12) from the post-season with a 2-0 win.

Anthony Coppola, with an assist from Justin Alford put the Eagles on the board and an own goal added some insurance.

Next up for AACS (8-7-3) is a semifinal date, on Thursday, at second-seeded Concordia Prep.

The MIAA B Conference championship game is scheduled for Sunday at Anne Arundel Community College.
