Vikings end Friends’ historic playoff run in MIAA B hoops semifinal; Pilgrim scores 23 points
With a trip to the MIAA B Conference basketball final at stake, St. John’s Catholic Prep came to life in the second half to pull away from Friends School for a 59-52 victory in a semifinal in Frederick Thursday.
Senior guard Brandon Pilgrim scored 23 points for St. John’s Catholic, and Masai Troutman finished with 16. Freshman Kedrick Curtis led Friends with 16 points.
Leading 30-24 at halftime, St. John’s Catholic finally found its offensive rhythm in the second half, opening up a 17-point cushion to advance to the final. The Vikings (20-11 overall) will play Archbishop Curley for the crown, Sunday at 3 p.m. at APGFCU Arena at Harford Community College.
Curley, the No. 1 seed, defeated Chapelgate Christian Academy, in the other semifinal Thursday.
Pilgrim scored seven points in the third quarter against Friends’ zone defense as the second-seeded Vikings stretched their advantage to 43-34, entering the fourth. St. John’s finished the job, gaining its first MIAA B final since winning the title in 2016.
