Spalding fends off John Carroll; Whitmore and Peterson combine for 43

Thanks to Cam Whitmore (left) and Ty Peterson, Spalding basketball picked up another road win Monday. The Cavaliers defeated John Carroll in a MIAA A Conference/Baltimore Catholic League contest.
Junior forward Cam Whitmore scored 23 points, and Ty Peterson contributed 20 as Archbishop Spalding defeated John Carroll School, 78-68, in a MIAA A Conference/Baltimore Catholic League basketball contest in Bel Air Monday evening.
The Cavaliers overcame an 11-point first half deficit, improving to 2-1 overall and in MIAA A and BCL play. Junior point guard Jordan Pennick added 16 points for the Severn school, and C.J. Scott had 13.
Spalding (2-1 overall, 2-1 MIAA A/BCL) trailed 34-23 in the second quarter, but closed with a 17-4 surge to claim a 40-38 lead. The Patriots regained the lead in the third quarter, only to see the Cavaliers go on a closing 12-6 run for a 55-52 advantage heading into the fourth.
They expanded the lead to 71-58, paving the way to a second straight road victory. Spalding won at Mount St. Joseph Saturday.
Cesar Tchilmbo and Jeannot Basima led John Carroll (1-2, 1-2 MIAA A, 0-2 BCL) with 13 points each. Junior Tyson Commander and Jalen Bryant each added 11.
Commander, a first-team All-BCL pick last year, reached the 1,000-point career scoring mark in the second quarter. Tchlimbo, a junior, was honored before Monday’s game for getting his 500th rebound last week.
The Patriots will play at St. Frances Academy in MIAA A/BCL action Wednesday evening. Spalding returns home Wednesday for a BCL tilt with St. Maria Goretti.
