The shakeup in the VSN Baseball Top 20 continues with Archbishop Spalding remaining No. 1 despite losing two out of three games last week to unranked teams and falling to second place in the MIAA A Conference.

Head-to-head results have to mean something, especially when those results are recent as in the case of Spalding and Calvert Hall. The latter Cardinals regained first place in the A Conference by winning all three of their games, but it was just less than two weeks ago (April 11) that the Hall lost a home game by 7-2 to the Cavaliers. They will meet again on May 9 and barring an unlikely total collapse by the Cavaliers between now and then, No. 1 will be at stake going into the double-elimination post season tournament of the conference.

Spalding’s 16-4 overall record and 9-3 league record are still No. 1 qualifiers and are topped only by Calvert Hall’s 17-2 and 10-2 credentials. Head-to-head separates the two for now.

Elsewhere around the area, Reservoir and Eastern Tech each jumped four places while Old Mill, Dulaney and Marriotts Ridge advanced three spots each to Nos. 8, 9 and 11 respectively going 3-0 each on the week while Arundel, a perennially ranked team and No. 19 when the season started, climbed back in at No. 20 after going from 1-3 to 8-4.

Reservoir dealt then No. 6 River Hill its first Howard County League loss to soar from No. 10 to No. 6 resulting in the Hawks going to No. 7. Each of the two Howard County powers are 12-2 overall. Eastern Tech zoomed from No. 20 to 16 at 8-3 overall and 6-1 in the Baltimore County A Division, a half game ahead of No. 9 Dulaney (12-2, 6-2).

In contrast, Gilman tumbled five places, Howard and Catonsville four, Westminster three places , Fallston and Archbishop Curley fell out. Curley took its ninth loss, the most by any winning or .500 team in the area. The Friars were routed by Calvert Hall, 12-3 dipping to 10-9. Gilman follows with the next most defeats at 8. The Greyhounds were smoked  by Spalding, 13-1 and by Calvert Hall, 15-7 leaving their overall mark at 15-8 and their ranking at No. 10.

Dulaney moved ahead of Gilman as result of the Lions, 5-4 triumph over the Hounds two weeks ago.

Howard slid from No. 8 to No. 12 at 9-5 overall with losses to then No. 14 Marriotts Ridge, 6-4 and then No. 20 Glenelg, 5-3 before barely getting by 3-7 Hammond, 3-2. Catonsville tanked from 13 to 17 with the least number of wins (7-3) of any Top 20 team after its slight 3-2 victory over 5-7 Towson before getting whomped 10-2 by Eastern Tech.

Fallston suffered an 11-10 loss to 6-6 North Harford before being nipped by then No. 7 Patterson Mill, 4-2 to fall out as the Huskies (13-1) landed at No. 5 by extending their winning streak to 13. North East – Cecil, the only team to defeat Patterson Mill (2-1 in the UCBAC season opener) replaced Fallston in the rankings coming in at No. 20 tied with Arundel.

North East is 12-1 overall.
