Saints Peter & Paul started its game with Cristo Rey, Wednesday in Easton, on a 10-0 run, but needed some late heroics to pull out a 68-65 victory in the MIAA C Conference.
Tyrese Purnell led the way for the Sabres, scoring a game-high 30 points and dominating the interior, but LJ Powell, who finished with 12 points, hit perhaps the biggest shot of the night. With the contest tied at 63-63 with just 30-seconds to play, Powell converted a three-pointer that pushed the Sabres in front to stay.
Naiad Thompson added 18 points for Saints Peter & Paul, which converted on 15-of-16 from the free throw line.
Tim Peterson kept the Hornets in the contest, scoring a team-high 23 points, while Ahmaud Jones and Terry Curry scored 14 each for Cristo Rey.
“He just destroyed us on the glass tonight and is lethal inside of five feet,” said Cristo Rey coach Eddie Healy of Purnell. “There are not any other guys with his combination of size and athleticism in our league, he’s going to give people fits this year.”
