In a basketball matchup between two MIAA C conference schools, Park upended Cristo Rey in an overtime thriller, Tuesday night in Brooklandville.

With the contest tied in overtime, 71-71, Park’s Mark Rothleitner hit two free throws with 10 seconds left to seal the deal and hand the Bruins a 73-71 victory. Rothleitner ended the game with 26 points, and center Ham Sonnenfeld scored 17 points for the Bruins.  In addition, guard Michael Ginsburg scored 12.

Park took the lead early, going on a 12-1 run to begin the game. Cristo Rey was able to cut the lead down, led by forward Jahmal Eggleston, who scored a game-high 34 points, and Terry Page, who scored 13.  Going into halftime, Park led 32-22.

The Bruins were determined to keep the lead, and came out strong in the second half. Early in the third quarter, Rothleitner pulled off a one-handed dunk on a fastbreak which got the Bruins fired up.  But, Cristo Rey, anchored by Eggleston, stormed back and tied the game.  The Hornets then took a five point lead with four minutes left in the game.

Late in the fourth quarter, Park’s Drew Goldfarb and Jake Abrams each got steals, and behind some clutch free throws by Rothleitner and Sonnenfeld, the Bruins managed to tie the game at 65.  In overtime, both teams scored early.  Then, with 10 seconds left, Rothleitner was fouled and hit two free throws to put Park ahead 73-71. Cristo Rey was unable to score in the final seconds, and the Bruins took home a victory.
