St. Frances Academy boys’ basketball team won’t get the chance to defend the MIAA A Conference championship, but has the Baltimore Catholic League Tournament to look forward to. Friday, St. Frances showed it will be a factor in the upcoming BCL playoff. 

St. Frances defeated second-ranked Mount St. Joseph, 69-67, in overtime in a Baltimore Catholic League contest in east Baltimore. Senior post Eral Penn scored 21 points, and Elijah Epps added 17.

The East Chase Street school wiped out a 14-point fourth quarter deficit to force overtime where the Panthers denied Mount St. Joseph on its final two possessions for victory. Monday, St. Frances (14-16 overall, 5-9 BCL) lost to St. Vincent Pallotti, eliminating the Panthers from the postseason tournament.

St. Frances was in trouble early, down 20-8 after one, and 34-20 at halftime. Freshman guard Adrian Baldwin had 14 points for the Panthers, who outscored St. Joe, 26-12, in the final period of regulation.

Darryl Morsell had 17 points for Mount St. Joseph (28-3), and McMillan finished with 12. The Gaels didn’t have junior center Jalen Smith in the second half because of a sore heel.

Mount St. Joseph finish BCL regular season play at 11-3. The Gaels have a half-game lead over St. Maria Goretti for first. Goretti hosts Archbishop Spalding in its BCL regular season finale next Friday.

St. Frances is back in action Saturday against No. 7 Woodlawn at the Public vs. Private Showcase at Baltimore City Community College.
