Dons fall to St. Christopher’s of Richmond

In a back-and-forth battle on the gridiron at Blakefield, No. 8 Loyola suffered its first football defeat of 2019, 30-26, on Saturday, to St. Christopher’s of Richmond, Va.

In a game that was tied 23-23 at the half, Loyola took a three point lead with 9 minutes, 36 seconds to play in the fourth quarter on a 38-yard field goal, but St. Christopher’s (7-1 overall) responded with a 5-yard touchdown run by Andre Greene, two minutes later, and the visitors made those points stand up for the victory.

Loyola (6-1) started fast in the first quarter with a 75-yard touchdown pass from Jordon Moore to Kaire Umoja and a 32-yard field goal by Gill to take a 10-0 lead. St. Christopher’s, however, scored 13 points in the final 14 seconds of the opening quarter to take the lead.

The big play vaulted Loyola right back in front, early in the second quarter, when Moore complete a 79-yard TD throw to Keegan Pross. The Dons then scored on a 32-yard run by Umoja to take a 23-13 lead.

As it did late in the first quarter, St. Christopher’s, coached by former McDonogh School standout linemen Lance Clelland, packed in two scores in the final minute of the half to tie the contest heading to the break.

The Dons will be on the road again next week as they play at Woodlawn on Friday night.
