Playing in the opening round of the 61st Annual Sleepy Thompson Invitational Tournament, St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes School in Northern Virgina, No. 5 Calvert Hall lost an overtime heart-breaker to Virginia Academy, 73-72.

The Cardinals erased a one-point deficit at the end of one quarter to take a 37-32 lead at the half before Virginia Academy rallied to force a 65-65 tie at the end of regulation. The games was tied eight times and the lead changed hands six times.

Brendan Adams had a big opening performance for the Cardinals, scoring 28 points and grabbing five rebounds. The majority of Calvert Hall’s offense came from just three players, as Josh Cornish netted 18 and Logan Curtis scoring 16. Cornish led the Cards with nine rebounds and Peter Ilardo had seven.

Virginia Academy was led by 28 points from Ejike Obinna and Jahill Jenkins netted 18.

Calvert Hall returns to action on Friday in the Consolation Bracket as it faces Episcopal (VA) at 3:00 p.m.
