Cavaliers amass 474 yards in a 52-3 MIAA A Conference victory
Fourth-ranked Archbishop Spalding had few problems, Friday, in running over Gilman, 52-3, in MIAA A Conference football.
The Cavaliers scored 21 points in each of the first two quarters to build a 42-0 bulge and coasted throughout the second half with a running clock rolling. Spalding amassed 474 yards of offense, divided almost evenly between rushing and passing, as it improved to 5-2 this fall and 1-0 in the A Conference.
Backup quarterback Nick Gutierrez led the passing attack, complete 9-of-11 throws for 169 yards and two scores and he also rushed for one. Zakee Wheatley caught three balls for 102 yards and two touchdowns and Rashad Powell rushed nine times for 91 yards and a score.
In addition, Spalding starting quarterback Austin Tutas, who played just one quarter, threw for one score and rushed for another. The Cavaliers generated 23 first downs in the contest and did not punt once.
The Spalding defense was even more impressive, limiting Gilman to just 15 yards of total offense. The Cavaliers did not create any turnovers, but had a pair of sacks.
Gilman’s lone score came on a 38-yard field goal by Kyle Morris at the start of the second quarter.
