No. 4 Calvert Hall survived a strong challenge from visiting Mount St. Joseph, Wednesday afternoon in Towson, as the Cardinals pulled out a 2-1 MIAA A Conference soccer victory.
Calvert Hall (5-1-1, 4-1-1) broke on top early, as Camillo Sanchez fed Ben Alexander for a header, just minutes into the contest.
St. Joe (2-4, 1-3), a young team which starts six sophomores, three juniors and only two seniors, hung tough and pulled even, midway through the first half, when Josh DeBoy, with an assist from Jake Mazzei, scored.
The Cardinals failed to take advantage of a penalty kick opportunity, which would have put them back on top, early in the second half, but Sanchez eventually got the game winner when he converted an assist from Dom Fullano. The win elevated Calvert Hall into first place in the A Conference.
Only one other game was on tap in the league on Wednesday as No. 5 Archbishop Curley (6-4, 2-3) traveled to No. 15 Archbishop Spalding (4-4-1, 1-3) and won, 3-0. Senior striker Tre Pulliam scored all three goals for the Friars.
