Archbishop Curley High’s first road adventure was a success as the 20th-ranked Friars posted a 31-14 victory over Edmondson in a non-league football contest in west Baltimore Friday afternoon.

Senior running back James Diggs had 151 total yards for Curley (2-0 overall), and Tyron Roper rushed 100 yards and two touchdowns. Josue Curbean and Kevron Walker each found the end zone for Edmondson (0-1).

The Friars tattered the hosts for 249 yards on the ground, spoiling the Baltimore City school’s season debut. Last year, Curley routed the Red Storm, 42-6, in northeast Baltimore.

Curley established a 10-0 first quarter, courtesy of Diggs’ 51-yard touchdown catch from junior Issac Clarke and Trevor Mavromihalis’ 46-yard field goal. Edmondson responded in the final seconds of the quarter as Curbean hauled in senior Michael Taylor’s throw for a 51-yard score. Taylor’s conversion pass to Cordell Joyner brought the Red Storm within 10-8.

The Friars answered on the next drive, going 68 yards in 11 plays, capped by Diggs’ 3-yard run. The MIAA B Conference stronghold extended the advantage to 23-8 as Diggs slipped into the end zone from 4 yards out, completing an 8-play, 65-yard trek to start the second half.

Edmondson started attacking Curley through the air with Taylor completing 5 of 6 passes for 58 yards (also rushed for 10). Walker completed a 10-play, 75-yard drive with a 5-yard run, bringing Edmondson within 23-14 with 3 minutes, 35 seconds remaining in the third.

Curley would respond again as Roper broke off a 23-yard run on the next play from scrimmage. Seven plays later, Roper barrelled into the end zone from 9 yards, pushing the Friars’ advantage to 31-14 early in the fourth. Edmondson got a long pass play from Taylor to senior wideout Roland Green, putting the hosts inside Curley’s 15, but Carlos Artson intercepted Taylor on the next play.

Cam Mays had an interception for the Friars’ defense which recorded five sacks and limited Edmondson to less than 60 yards rushing. Clarke also finished with 134 total yards (3-of-5 passing for 91 yards and 43 rushing).

The Friars have a bye next week before traveling to Boys’ Latin the following Friday for their MIAA B opener. Edmondson welcomes Digital Harbor this Friday in the city league Division I opener.
