The wind was blowing the ball was flying, Wednesday at Blakefield, as No. 2 Calvert Hall out-slugged host Loyola, 12-8, in MIAA A Conference baseball. The Cardinals lost an early 5-0 lead, but scored four times in the eighth to prevail.

The Cardinals (8-4, 4-1) collected 13 hits, including a 4-for-5 performance from catcher Garret Matheny. Matheny smacked a triple and a home run, drove in two runs and scored four, while amassing 9 total bases.

Jose Torres added three hits in four trips, including a double, drove in a run and scored one. Leadoff hitter J.P. Murphy had just one hit in six plate appearances, but it was a 3-run triple in the decisive 8th inning, while Nate Bosse and Mike Poling each had a pair of RBI.

Calvert Hall led 5-0 entering the bottom of the fifth, before Loyola (1-4, 1-5) got on the board with a single run. The Cardinals got the run back in the top of the sixth, but the Dons erupted for 5 in the home half of the inning to tie the game, 6-6.

The excitement continued as both teams scored 2 runs in the seventh, before the Cardinals finally took command in the extra frame.

Will Glock was 2-for-3 for Loyola with 3 RBI. Glock, who had a triple, came up with a 2-run single in the bottom of the seventh to keep the Dons alive. The Dons also took advantage of six Calvert Hall errors.
