No. 2 Calvert Hall, seeking to solidify its second place standing in the MIAA A Conference soccer race, found itself tangled in another tight battle with No. 6 Loyola, Wednesday, but the Cardinals prevailed, 1-0, with a score in the final minute of regulation, at Blakefield.

The win avenged a 2-1 overtime loss to the Dons earlier this year and gave the Cardinals (9-3-1, 8-2-1) a seven point lead over the Dons (6-7, 6-6) in the battle for second place.

The winning goal came on a penalty kick by Dom Fullano, following a late foul. The loss was the fourth straight for the Dons.

First-place McDonogh continues to cruise towards the top seed as the top-ranked Eagles routed Archbishop Spalding (5-10-1, 2-8-1), 4-1. Tunde Akinlosotu had a hat-trick and Stephen Nichols had three assists for McDonogh (14-0-1, 10-0-1, 31 points).

Elsewhere, No. 15 Mount St. Joseph (8-5, 5-4, 15 points) remained red-hot with a 2-1 overtime win over No. 7 Archbishop Curley (9-8, 4-6) and John Carroll knocked off No. 14 Gilman (6-7, 4-6), 3-1.

Jake Dengler, Jevan Leyh and Scott Pajerowski scored for the Patriots (5-8-1, 2-8-1).

Wednesday’s results left St. Paul’s, which was idle, in fourth place with 16 points, followed by fifth place St. Joe. Curley and Gilman are now tied for sixth, with 12 points each.
