No. 15 Calvert Hall continued its hot start to the 2013-14 boys basketball season, as the Cardinals improved to 5-0 with a big 70-54 win over Cesar Chavez (DE), Friday night, in the semifinals of the Sidwell Friends Basketball Tournament in Washington, D.C.
The Cardinals doubled up their opponent in the opening quarter, racing out to an 18-9 lead and they came within a basket of matching those numbers in the second quarter as their halftime lead swelled to 34-18.
Four Cardinals scored in double figures led by a monster game from junior Evan Phoenix, who had a monster game with 19 points, 18 rebounds, four blocks and two assists.
Nico Clareth scored 18 points to go with eight rebounds and six assists. In addition, Drew Edwards and Sean Mayberry each scored 11 points and combined for 11 rebounds.
Other notables for the Cardinals were Chris Wallace (4 points, 10 rebounds), Reggie Rouse (5 points, 5 rebounds, two assists) and TJ Duckett (2 points, 3 rebounds).
The Cardinals, who also defeated Takoma Park in Thursday’s opening round, will meet DC’s McKinley in Saturday night’s championship game (7:45 p.m.).
