Top-ranked Calvert Hall opened its 2016 soccer season, Tuesday, on a strong note, blanking visiting Gilman, 2-0, in the MIAA A Conference opener for both schools.

The Cardinals dominated possession in the Gilman end and outlasted a determined defensive effort by the Greyhounds with single goals in each half to come away with the victory.

Senior Zach Urbanski tallied the first goal of 2016 for the Cardinals, off a set piece feed from senior Brady O’Connor. From the left side, O’Connor lofted a volley over the Greyhound wall which Urbanski reached first, spinning as he drove a low hard shot across the turf, past Gilman senior keeper John Philipou.

Up to that point, Philipou had been outstanding, turning back three excellent opportunities for the Cardinals, including a beautifully timed header by Calvert Hall’s Ben Alexander.

“It was a good game today. I thought it was a good early season match,” said Calvert Hall coach Rick Zinkand. “The elements were tough with the heat on the turf for both teams. Gilman (1-1, 0-1) played well defensively and their keeper made some very good saves.”

Chris Carroll netted the Cardinals second goal, in the second half, with a great individual effort.

Calvert Hall will return to action on Friday, when it hosts John Carroll, in another A Conference clash, while Gilman will be at home on Friday, playing host to St. Paul’s.
