Former Terp basketball standout to be inducted in September
Darryl Morsell, who starred in basketball at Mount St. Joseph High and the University of Maryland, has been selected for induction into St. Joe’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
Morsell will join Art Baker (track and field), Harry “Keats” Baugher (swimming), Tristan Boustany (tennis), Torrey Butler (basketball) Brian Costabile (lacrosse), Jeff Cross (basketball) Jordan Portner (tennis) Peter Solomon (baseball), Archie Wannamaker (football).
The group will be inducted Sept. 3 at the Irvington school.
A two-time All-Met first-team selection, Morsell led the Gaels to the Baltimore Catholic League Tournament championship as a senior in 2017. He was named the John Pleyvak Most Valuable Player.
Morsell started 108 games over four seasons at Maryland, and was the Big Ten Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year as a senior in 2021. Played alongside another former St. Joe standout Jalen Smith (Milwaukee Bucks), the Terps won a share of the Big 10 regular season championship in 2020.
Allowed a fifth season for COVID-19, Morsell transferred to Marquette for the 2021-22 season. He averaged 13.4 points (second-best on team behind former Poly star Justin Lewis) and 3.6 rebounds, and was a Big East Conference honorable mention choice.
