Led by 18 points from junior Montez Mathis, John Carroll pulled away from visiting Chapelgate Christian in the third quarter, Tuesday in Bel Air, and the Patriots prevailed 67-60 in a non-league MIAA basketball contest.
Leading 34-29 at the half, the Patriots (3-0) outscored Chapelgate 20-9 in the third quarter to take command. The Yellow Jackets, playing in their season opener, closed strong with a 22-13 advantage in the final quarter.
Sophomore Nigel Haughton added 12 points for John Carroll while 6-foot-7 freshman Cameron Byers added 10 points for the Patriots. John Carroll played its second consecutive game without junior All-American Immanuel Quickley. Quickely, among the most highly recruited players in the nation, recently narrowed is college choices to eight. The group includes Maryland, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Miami, Providence, Virginia and Washington.
Chapelgate got very balanced scoring with four players in double figures. Jalen Morant had a game-high 12 points for the Yellow Jackets, while Jake Tringali and Odell Dickerson had 11 each and Cliff McEachin netted 10.
