Eagles top Philly private league champ Malvern; Procaccini goes for 115 and 2 TDs
Last season, Malvern Prep held McDonogh School without a touchdown. The Eagles’ offense struck back in the 2019 season opener for both Friday evening.
McDonogh defeated the Pennsylvania school, 24-13. Senior Giovanni Procaccini rushed for 115 yards and two touchdowns, and Stefan Egbe and At Ntantang added rushing scores.
The Owings Mills school (1-0 overall) rushed for nearly 300 yards (283), winning its seventh straight season opener. The Eagles went 3-6 last season, including a 19-3 home loss to Malvern Prep, which won the Philadelphia Inter-Ac League title with a perfect 11-0 mark and 10 Division I seniors.
The Eagles’ veteran line, led by seniors Beau Bedard and Cole Kirol, had its way with Malvern Friday as Procaccini scored on runs of eight and 14 yards. Junior Dante Trader had an eight-yard score, helping McDonogh to a 20-6 halftime lead.
Procaccini told PAPrepLive.com the Eagles were locked in.
“We had a great week of practice this past week,” Procaccini said. “We were confident coming into the game and we thought we could run the ball on them, but we did not expect to do as well as we did tonight. The offensive line was amazing for us tonight.”
Sophomore quarterback Preston Howard added 64 yards, and junior Harrison Beattie connected on a pair of field goals. The Eagles’ defense, led by Penn State-bound linebacker Curtis Jacobs, limited Malvern to 93 yards on the ground.
McDonogh opens its home slate Friday afternoon against Pennsylvania’s Berks Catholic.
