Eagles rally past Glenelg Country; Billups posts double-double
After reaching the MIAA A Conference semifinals last season, McDonogh School basketball team has struggled with injuries, inexperience and suspensions this season. The Eagles, however, have stayed resilient.
McDonogh defeated No. 15 Glenelg Country School, 52-47, in a MIAA A Conference contest in Owings Mills. Junior forward Jared Billups scored 28 points and pulled down 13 rebounds for the Eagles.
Trailing 37-36 entering the fourth, McDonogh outscored the Dragons, 16-10, to move above .500 (15-14) for the first time in the new year. The Eagles were 9-8 after winning the Josh Palmer/Elmira Holiday Inn National bracket title in upstate New York during the Christmas holiday break.
In winning for the fourth time in five games (six of eight overall), McDonogh (9-8 MIAA A) moved into a virtual tie with No. 14 Boys’ Latin School and St. Vincent Pallotti (both 8-7) for third place in the MIAA A Black Division with a week left in the regular season.
The top four teams from the Black and Red divisions will advance to the MIAA A postseason tournament.
Dani Dennis-Sutton added 13 points, and Mathani Paul-Swinson had 10 points and four rebounds for the Eagles. Igor Yoka-Bratasz finished with 14 points for Glenelg Country (13-9, 10-7 MIAA A), which fell a game behind 11th-ranked Gilman School (10-5) for first in the MIAA A Black.
The Dragons, who are tied in the loss column with BL and Pallotti and a full-game clear of McDonogh, plays at No. 12 John Carroll School Friday and hosts Pallotti on Valentine Day’s evening to complete MIAA A regular season play.
McDonogh plays at 13th-ranked Loyola Blakefield Friday evening and at Gilman School Wednesday to finish its MIAA A regular season.
