McDonogh School’s boys’ basketball team ran its record to 10-4 with a 54-46 win over The Miller School from Charlottsville, Va. in the opening round of the Benedictine Capital City Classic in Richmond Sunday.

The 11th-ranked Eagles overcame early foul trouble to senior leader Bruce Moore (13 points), who picked his third personal, two minutes into the second half, with an outstanding defensive effort.

The Miller School featured 6-foot-10 VMI commit Tyler Creamer (10 points) and 7-footer Dajour Dickens (14 points, 15 boards and 3 blocks). Dickens has been offered by the University of Virginia.

Damian Chong-Qui was once again outstanding down the stretch. The sopohomore guard ended with 15 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. Junior Noah Locke dropped in 16 points, including two deep three-pointers to give McDonogh the lead late in the third quarter.

Senior Chuck Okehie had an outstanding overall game with great defense and 8 boards. The Eagles move on to the semifinals Monday at 5:30 p.m. versus Millwood (Va.), which defeated Baltimore Catholic League member St. Maria Goretti, 61-44, in a first round match Sunday.

No. 8 Calvert Hall College advanced to the semifinals, surviving a big comeback by McKinley Tech (D.C.) to claim a 78-75 overtime victory. Towson University recruit Justin Gorham led Calvert Hall with 26 points and 10 rebounds.

The defending MIAA A Conference and BCL champ Cardinals led 57-49 entering the fourth quarter, but McKinley outscored them 18-10 to force overtime. Brendan Adams and Austin Griffiths each had 13 points and four rebounds for Calvert Hall.

The Cardinals will play event host Benedictine in a semifinal game at 7:15 p.m Monday.
