Curley stays red hot; Calvert Hall wins at Gilman

No. 6 Mount St. Joseph traveled to Blakefield, Monday, for an MIAA A Conference soccer match with No. 9 Loyola, and the Gaels prevailed, 1-0, on a second half goal by Casey McCanna.

Loyola pressured in St. Joe end most of the first half, but was unable to capitalize on its nine shots and the game went to the half deadlocked at 0-0.

The Gaels broke through with 16 minutes left.

Senior Johnny Sloop setup the game’s only goal when he won a ball in St. Joe’s final third before playing it to Jordan Ehart on the baseline. Ehart then crossed it, inside the six, where junior Casey McCanna finished it with his right foot.

Loyola continued to pressure for the equalizer, as it outshot the Gaels, 18-8, but St. Joe got one that counts, producing the victory. St. Joe (7-2 overall) is now 5-1 in league play and its five points have it tied for first in the conference with No. 1 Archbishop Curley and No. 2 McDonogh.

Loyola is now 3-4-1 overall and 1-4 in league play.

Curley (8-0, 5-0) continues to scored goals in bunches. The Friars routed John Carroll (2-5, 2-4) 10-0 on Monday. Over the last week, Curley has won four games by a combined score of 28-0 and have outscored their eight opponents thus far by a combined score of 43-3.

For the second time this season, the Friars will face the No. 2 team in the area, having defeated Mount St. Joe when it was No. 2, Curley will host McDonogh, the current No. 2 team, on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. McDonogh is also undefeated (7-0, 5-0).

Also on Monday in the A Conference, No. 10 Calvert Hall defeated Gilman, 3-0, in Roland Park.

Jacob Brandt got CHC on the board first with his goal off of an assist from Ben Bender. Bender followed with his own goal, with Sean Barwick getting the assist. Cam Ohrin finished the scoring in the second half with Barwick once again getting the assist.

Calvert Hall improved to 4-2 in the A Conference. The Cardinals sit just three points back of the tri-leaders.

Gilman (2-5 overall) slipped to 1-4 in the conference.
