Win or lose, first year John Carroll basketball coach John Zito can count on 30 points or more from junior transfer Montez Mathis, or so it seems.
Mathis who has eclipsed the 30 point mark several times already, flirted with 40 on Wednesday night, before settling for 37 points and nine rebounds to lead the Patriots to a 75-66 MIAA A Conference/Baltimore Catholic League victory over No. 11 St. Frances.
The eighth ranked Patriots (6-3 overall, 3-1 MIAA A, 1-1 BCL) who are without junior All-American Immanuel Quickley who is recovering from a foot injury, have been searching for a secondary threat to support Mathis’ scoring and they got it Thursday in the form of Nigel Haughton, who scored 21 points and added six assists.
St. Frances is now 2-4 overall, while falling to 1-2 in both MIAA A and the BCL.
