After a winless regular season, McDonogh wins baseball playoff opener

Despite several near misses against several of the top teams in the MIAA A Conference, the McDonogh baseball team failed to win a game in the regular season. When the league’s double-elimination post-season tournament got underway on Thursday, however, the Eagles found that elusive first victory, defeating St. Mary’s, 4-0, at Bestgate Park in Annapolis.

Jack Bussard pitched a complete-game three-hit shutout for McDonogh, striking out 12 St. Mary’s batters in the process.

Ben Kinney had a double and two RBI to pace the offense and Ryan Arnold added a hit and scored a pair of runs. Jack Jacobson also doubled for the Eagles.

McDonogh now advances to the quarterfinal round of the winners bracket and will play at top-seeded Archbishop Spalding on Friday. St. Mary’s falls into the elimination bracket and will face the loser of Thursday’s match-up between 2nd-seeded Gilman and 7th-seeded Loyola, on Saturday on the road.

Friday’s other two quarterfinal round games are 6th-seeded Archbishop Curley at 3rd-seeded Mount St. Joseph and 5th-seeded John Carroll at 4th-seeded Calvert Hall.
