Walsh and Fischer each score 17 points in comeback upset

Coming off a home loss to St. Maria Goretti on Wednesday, things looked to be heading south again on Friday for No. 9 Loyola, as the host Dons fell behind No. 3 John Carroll, 20-3, at the start of their MIAA A Conference/Baltimore Catholic League contest at Blakefield.

The Patriots’ hot start was sparked by five first quarter 3-pointers. The lead remained near or above 10 points all the way until the start of the fourth quarter, before the Dons staged a furious rally that led to an 86-78 overtime upset.

The Dons (14-9) managed to tie the game, 73-73, at the end of regulation and then scored the first six points of overtime to take control. Free throws by Gavin Walsh, Jayden Moore and Owen Fischer sealed the victory in the extra session.

Ryder Drew led five Dons in double figures with 27 points, including 7 three pointers. Fischer and Walsh each scored 17, while Moore finished with 15 and Charley Hepting scored 10.

The comeback spoiled a spectacular 30-point performance by John Carroll’s Tyson Commander. Jean Bassima added 17 points for the Patriots (16-9) and TJ Vaughn added 14.
